The Fear of The LORD Definition | The Fear of The LORD Bible Verses

The fear of the LORD bible study. The teaching on the Fear of God has been avoided and neglected all because of 1 scripture that is found in 2 Timothy 1:7 which says “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind; or another verse in 1 John 'Perfect love casts out all fear'”. There is no disputing what these scriptures say but many interpret these in a way as to negate the more than 111 other scriptures that teach us that we are to fear God. The spirit of fear is to be afraid of the unknown future, afraid of what man can do to us, afraid of the darkness or things we know little about, afraid of failure, afraid of rejection, this list can go on and on; but it does not mean that we are not to fear God and revere Him. We are told to fear Him. This is a fear of the consequences of not respecting Him as much as it is a reverential fear; it is an attitude of deep honor, respect and love. It is to be in awe and wonder of His Omnipotence, His Omnipresence and His Omniscience and His Majesty. This video shows the full counsel of God and why we should fear God.

Solomon tells us that the goal of life is to fear God and keep His commandments. Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this applies to every man. (Ecclesiastes 12:13) We are told by Jesus not to be afraid of those who can only kill the body but Fear Him who can kill both body and soul (Matthew 10:28). The fear of the LORD is not restricted to the Old Testament. The Fear of God is something that has to be learned, taught by God’s Word. Machiavelli taught in The Prince: for a ruler it is better to be feared than loved; Paul taught “knowing the terror of the Lord, we persuade men”. God cannot be revered if we don’t first fear Him, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. Consider how we all fear the law and the power or the government has over us if we disobey, we are to Fear God in the same way. This gives way to a healthy reverence and a life of enjoyment; just as you cannot enjoy the blessings of your society without fearing the law, nor can you enjoy the blessings of God unless you fear and respect Him; the book of Hebrews discusses this issue in great depth.

Unfortunately today, there is no fear of God in the church; just like the times of Israel when they were backslidden so is the church today. God constantly made reference to this citing that “There is not fear of God in these people…” the same hold true for today. We are in a “false grace” movement that teaches “anything goes” but the bible tells us to fear God for He is a consuming fire! This is one of the reasons society has become so wicked, the fear of the LORD is no longer taught, in times of old, even the criminal element of our society feared God and we never saw such crimes as we are witnessing today.

Biblical Scriptures dealing with the fear of the LORD:

Now all the people witnessed the thunderings, the lightning flashes, the sound of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood afar off. {19} Then they said to Moses, "You speak with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us, lest we die." {20} And Moses said to the people, "Do not fear; for God has come to test you, and that His fear may be before you, so that you may not sin." (Exodus 20:18-20)

The LORD is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. {9} He will not always strive with us, or will He keep His anger forever. {10} He has not dealt with us according to our sins, nor punished us according to our iniquities. {11} For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; {12} As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us. {13} As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities those who fear Him. {14} For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. {15} As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. {16} For the wind passes over it, and it is gone, And its place remembers it no more. {17} But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him, And His righteousness to children's children.
